Moonlit Wings Playwriting Contest 2016 for writing for young people (Washington, DC)

Since 2008, Moonlit Wings Productions has mounted over 40 world-premieres of new theatre-for-youth workshop productions every summer. This summer they are selecting 4 brand-new scripts to workshop and produce.

Each winning show rehearses for a 2-week session with a professional DC creative team and concludes with a public performance. Playwrights are given a thorough written production review and the opportunity to debut and promote their work with our leading youth arts organization.

Past collaborations have been with authors published by NYC’s Playscripts Inc., Eldridge Publishing, Beat By Beat Press, and several independent literary organizations. This is our 9th year in partnership with the Fairfax County Park Authority (est. in 1950), the 6th largest county in the USA, located in the Washington, D.C. National Capital Area.

What to submit:

  • Plays or Musicals (straight plays are fine, although they will ask to work music into your play)
  • Runtime: 20-40 minutes (longer scripts may be submitted but they will ask to make necessary cuts)
  • LARGE cast, 8 minimum – 35 maximum, ensemble shows preferred, female driven or gender neutral casts encouraged.  *They will not consider scripts with less than 8 characters.*
  • Material suitable to be performed by talent ages 7-16

How to apply:  Submissions can be made via the Moonlit Wings website.

Deadline:  14 March 2016

  1. Hi, is this competition eligible for international writers, and can I be able to send my play without having any professional writing experience yet?

    1. Hi Maidi, as far as we understand you should be eligible, but if you want to check before sending your script in it’s best to contact the organisers directly. (We are only sharing this opportunity, we aren’t running it.) Thanks!
