Theatre of the Gentle Furies seeking to commission a short story for performance
We are seeking to commission a writer to write a short story for performance (around 1 page), or more depending on availability, for our theatre project when I will be a bird.
The project is a collaboration between theatre and climate science that looks to tackle climate ‘doomism’, help people to see their place in future change within communities, and provide a safe haven for the movement of fear into hope and action. Using a framework of native birds from the British Isles, we are creating a gentle yet purposeful interrogation of humanity’s role in their own crisis that centres localised stories from across the British Isles, remixed with mythology and folklore, with varied perspectives and insights into our relationship with the natural world.
We are particularly interested in hearing from writers interested in, or with experience of, the following themes:
- Migration
- Intersection of climate change and social justice issues, in particular racial equality issues
- Myths, folklore or storytelling traditions from outside of Europe
We want and are excited to work with new people, and we fundamentally believe that if we are recipients of academic or public arts funding we have a responsibility to work with a diverse group of artists. Writers from global majority backgrounds are particularly encouraged to apply.
All writers on this project are paid in compliance with Independent Theatre Council weekly or daily rates.
How do I put myself forward for this opportunity?
- Please email info@gentlefuries.com with ‘bird submission’ in the subject line.
- Please feel free to include a bit of information about yourself and your previous work in the email, or links to your website/portfolio. If you wish to be anonymous in this initial email that is absolutely fine.
- Please attach, as a word document, pdf, or voice note, up to 5 pages of writing for the stage or a short story. This does not need to be linked to the brief – please send us any pre-existing work which you feel represents your style, creativity, and talent.
- Please tell us something about why you are interested in this project.
Deadline: Sunday June 29th at 10pm.
