This introduction to writing for radio, for beginners, draws on tutor Fin Kennedy’s experience as a writer of audio drama for BBC Radio 4, with reference to other innovative writing for the medium. The workshop will start with an introduction to the formats and commissioning process of current radio drama, move on to creative approaches to telling stories with sound, involve some textual analysis of some recent BBC Radio output including sound clips, and look at emerging radio forms such a short audio drama podcasts. Advice will be given on the BBC Radio commissioning process, including a two hour Q&A with independent radio drama producer Boz Temple-Morris. Time to work on a treatment for a new radio play of one’s own will be included.
Fin Kennedy is an award-winning playwright, frequent writer for BBC Radio 4, Artistic Director of Tamasha, and visiting Lecturer at Central Saint Martins (MA Dramatic Writing).
