Hartswood West is joining forces with BBC Writersroom Wales and Creative Skillset to find and develop the most exciting, up-and-coming TV writers with a strong connection to Wales.
As part of Hartswood’s commitment to developing its creative base in Wales they are looking to invest in two ambitious new writers and develop their ideas to initially pitch to the BBC.
What they are looking for: people who’ve already started their journey as a writer and had at least one piece of work produced – whether it’s a play, radio drama, a commissioned online drama, a professionally produced readthrough, an episode of a continuing TV drama, or a short film. They are looking for new voices with the potential to create exciting original content, but haven’t yet had their own authored TV Drama produced.
What to submit: send the script you are most proud of, to be read by our team at Hartswood and BBC Writersroom. They will ask the most promising writers to submit a one-page pitch for an original TV drama idea and a panel of Hartswood, BBC Writersroom and a BBC Commissioning Editor will select those with the most potential for a six month development period that will include feedback from top industry professionals, and sessions with leading Welsh writers such as Russell T Davies and Cath Tregenna.
“We are looking for ambitious scripts and distinctive voices. Drama or Comedy, we are open to anything that reflects how you write”.
Who can apply: the award is open to Welsh writers, those living and working in Wales, and also those who can authentically depict Welsh stories and Welsh characters and reflect the culture of Wales in their writing.
Brian Minchin, Producer at Hartswood West: “Ambitious new voices are the lifeblood of drama and Hartswood are thrilled to join forces with BBC Writersroom and Skillset to find the brightest and boldest new Welsh writers.”
Helen Perry, Development Producer, BBC Writersroom Wales: “This is a fantastic opportunity for BBC Writersroom Wales to discover and develop the next generation of great Welsh TV writers. We’re delighted to be working with both Hartswood West and Skillset on such a focussed scheme, with the clear aim of bringing more welsh stories and voices to BBC Network TV.”
Kaye Elliott, Director of High-end TV for Creative Skillset: “Creative Skillset and the High-end TV Levy are focused on the development of talent and crew across the whole of the UK and understand the importance of telling a diversity of stories driven by local talent. We are very pleased to be a partner on this initiative supported by the High-end TV Levy Fund and look forward to seeing what the investment delivers.”
