Through a series of writing exercises, participants will learn tools and techniques to help them generate theatrical stories, create characters, write dialogue and structure scripts as well as exploring form, subtext and metaphor in plays. Participants will bring in a short extract from a script they’ve written which will be read and workshopped by the group. Participants will then learn about rewriting and get tips about starting and sustaining a career as a freelance playwright.
The course will be led by Norfolk based playwright James McDermott. James graduated from UEA with an MA (Distinction) in Scriptwriting and trained on The Royal Court Writers Group. James’s plays for INK Festival include ‘Mixed Up’ (2019), ‘Steam’ (2016) and ‘Beached’ (2015). James’s other plays include ‘Fast Food’ starring Jude Law (Lyric Hammersmith), ‘Street Life’ (NTR Stage Two) and ‘Rubber Ring’ (UK Tour) which has been published by Samuel French. James is currently writing new plays for Hampstead Theatre, HighTide, Eastern Angles, Norwich Arts Centre and Norwich Playhouse.
