New creative writing course by Tamasha x Hatchette – online applications open

Despite the coronavirus situation, Tamasha and Hachette are pleased to announce the launch of a new creative writing course, aimed at culturally diverse theatre writers interested in learning to write prose fiction and non-fiction. After two successful pilots in 2018 and 2019, they are soliciting open applications for the first time. Under the current circumstances, they aim to begin sessions as soon as they are allowed, and are currently working towards a September start. However in the meantime they will get the ball rolling by starting to receive and assess applications online. Once sessions are able to commence, they will run weekly for two-hour sessions over the course of three months.

There are two separate groups to apply for. Launched together, and running in parallel, the first group will focus on general fiction and non-fiction, with editors from Little, Brown and Orion. The second group will focus on science fiction, horror and fantasy, with editors from Gollancz. Both programmes will encompass an overview of the publishing process, writing workshops, industry advice and one-to-one sessions with mentors from across Hachette’s imprints. Published writers, literary agents and editors will lead individual sessions each week, followed by regular meetings with an appointed mentor. Writers will be supported to complete a full synopsis and some sample chapters. Both courses are fully subsidised by Hachette and Tamasha, and offered free of charge to the participating writers.

Both courses will run on a weekday evening tbc, 6.30-8.30pm from (hopefully) September-November 2020, with sessions taking place at Hachette’s offices in central London. Once the regular sessions are over, there will be a period of writing time and one-to-one sessions with mentors, with a January 2021 deadline for new material.

To apply:

  • CV
  •  A covering letter outlining your interest
  •  300 words on the new book idea you’d like to write
  •  A prose writing sample of up to two pages (which doesn’t have to be from the idea above)

Please send to admin@tamasha.org.uk. For more information please visit their website.

Deadline: Tuesday 5 May 2020
