Job Description
Poet in the City and Newcastle Libraries have collaborated to create
a Poetry Exchange Hub that brings people together to promote
women’s rights. Our Hub is producing an event at Newcastle Library
on the evening of Friday 11th August to:
- Start a conversation and raise awareness of public safety issues affecting women in the North East
- Celebrate women in the North East through poetry, spoken word and song
- Launch our Women’s Workspace at Newcastle City Library and continue our campaign for more across the city.
Our project examines the intersection of deprivation and misogyny
and explores the need for safe spaces for women and girls in the city.
We’re open to submissions from anyone who cares about these
issues and are inclusive of all those who identify as women.
We’re looking for a poet or spoken word artist to produce a poem
which will be performed at our event on the evening of Friday 11th
August. Research for the poem will take place in July 2023, through
meetings and workshops with our Poetry Exchange Hub. The
selected poet/spoken word artist will be required to attend at least
two research meetings with our Hub in July ahead of the event.
Job Requirements
The commissioned poem will be between 2 and 3 minutes long when
performed. The poet may be required to record the poem via audio or
video (Poet in the City will facilitate this if necessary). A written
version of the poem will also need to be submitted prior to the
performance date.
The poet will perform the poem alongside other appropriate material
as the headline artist of our event on 11th August. Overall, the
performance will last 20 minutes and will be an opportunity to
showcase other work, as long as the primary focus of the
performance is on women’s rights and/or women’s issues.
