Job Description

What lies beyond the edge of the water?

We are seeking a writer that is based in the North East of England to work alongside Photographer Tessa Bunney and in partnership with Stronger Shores and the national Beach of Dreams team alongside communities in South Tyneside to draw light on innovative nature-based solutions to coastal erosion and rising sea levels.

Together, they will deliver a series of site-specific creative workshops that will enable three local community groups to learn about kelp, sea grass and oysters, and to develop a connection with their coastal habitats through walking, photography, writing and zine making. The writer will work alongside Tessa and Stronger Shores to plan the content and delivery of these sessions.

In addition, Tessa and the writer will produce new work in response to Stronger Shores’ nature-based recovery projects. The Writer will write up to 3 creative writing pieces including poetry, flash fiction and short story. Tessa will produce a photographic series on the landscape and people who work with the plants and creatures that live in the sea.

The project will culminate in an outdoor photography exhibition and the launch of a booklet co-produced with the community groups and artists. The booklet will showcase original writing, poetry and photography inspired by the coast.

The commission fee is £2.500. This is a freelance contract. The writer will be able to work remotely for some of the time but will need to be able to deliver the engagement workshops in person in South Tyneside.

We anticipate 6 half days of work engagement workshops and approximately 6-8 further days work on the commission including the event day.
