Book Launch & Reading: Almost The Birthday Party by
Paul Kalburgi
Join playwright Paul Kalburgi for a one-night-only live reading of
his dark comedy Almost The Birthday Party, to celebrate its
publication by Playdead Press.
Almost The Birthday Party is an absurd riff on Harold Pinter’s
The Birthday Party – a fever dream of absurdity with dark
comedic undertones, in where the audience is subtly drawn into
the unsettling dynamic, becoming the surprise ‘other’ in the
unfolding “Pinteresque” nightmare.
When a resting actor and his retired partner invite
complete strangers to join a play reading group in their
parlour, things take an unsettling turn. Roused in
the dead of night to recall their fateful first stab at act one
of Pinter’s, The Birthday Party, hilarity and
absurdity unfold. But as elusive pages of the script surface
and figures from the troubling tableau demand an encore,
Kenny and Vern’s innocent quest for friendship
spirals into a Pinteresque nightmare!
