Writing Workshop Facilitator, Primary Schools, Southwark Playhouse

To coincide with the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower from Rotherhithe in 1620, Southwark Playhouse is looking to recruit up to three writers to lead on an exciting creative writing project in local primary schools.

Working with a school in the Rotherhithe area, writers will lead six – eight weekly workshops. Taking the story of the Mayflower as inspiration, the writers will lead the students through the writing of their own plays in response to stories and themes that emerge from the topic.

The plays will then be performed by professional actors as staged readings for the students to watch.

Due to current government regulations, workshops before Christmas 2020 will be led over Zoom, with the writer working with the students remotely. Decisions on activity for 2021 will take place closer to the time.

We are looking for writers with experience of working with young people, and leading workshops on writing for the stage. Although some awareness of the history of the Mayflower is desirable, resources and opportunities to find out about key elements of its history will be provided. This project is not primarily aimed at educating students on specific aspects of the Mayflower story but is also to encourage them to explore broader themes around history and migration, amongst others.

The workshops are scheduled to take place between November – December 2020 and January – March 2021 (with schools taking part at different times during this period) with the final performance in April 2021. Writers will also be expected to edit the students’ scripts for performance, in conjunction with the director.

The starting fee for the project will be £540, with additional fees dependent on number of workshops.

If you’re interested in this role, or have any questions, please email David Workman, Youth and Community Director, on david.workman@southwarkplayhouse.co.uk, with your CV and a cover letter/ email of no more than a side of A4 outlining why you would be suitable. Zoom interviews with shortlisted applicants will then be scheduled for w/b 16th November.

Southwark Playhouse is committed to being an Equal Opportunities Employer.

Deadline: 13 November 2020
