Curve is a leading producing theatre, creating compelling cultural experiences for all those who live, learn, visit and
work in Leicester.
We are looking for a local writer to work with us on our Summer 2022 community production. Over recent years,
our summer community productions have focused on revivals of large-scale musical titles. Looking to the future,
the focus of these community shows will now be plays created by local people and communities, which tell our
stories – Leicester’s story – and celebrate our remarkable, diverse heritage.
04 August 2022 marks the 50th anniversary since the Ugandan Asian community arrived in Leicester. These
remarkable journeys and stories will form the foundations of our Curve Community production in summer 2022. It
was on this day in 1972, the then president of Uganda, Idi Amin, issued an ultimatum to the Indian and Pakistani
minorities- they had just 90 days to leave the country. Many of the displaced were British citizens and as a result
emigrated in their thousands to the UK, where they waited in various refugee camps, for new homes and work.
Many headed for Leicester, a key city in the resettlement programme, as it had the largest South Asian community
in Britain at that time (and still does in relation to it size).
If you are a local writer with the lived experience necessary for this project and would like to collaborate with us
and our communities on this ambitious production, we’d love to hear from you.
