Theatre Renegade seeking playwright for Courting Drama at Southwark Playhouse

Theatre Renegade would like to invite submissions from writers to take part in next year’s Courting Drama project. The chosen piece will  be workshopped with the help of Theatre Renegade’s dramaturg; it will then be showcased at Southwark Playhouse’s Courting Drama event in January with a professional director and cast. Previous writers and directors who have taken part in the project have worked with theatres and companies like the Lowry, Royal Court Theatre, and Punchdrunk.

Theatre Renegade are looking for a piece between 12 and 20 minutes in length; this can be either an extract from a longer piece or an entire short play. They believe very strongly in the idea of collaboration and would like the chosen writer to be available to attend some rehearsals in London, dates to be decided by the director and writer, and to the show of Courting Drama itself on the 25th January, 2015.

About Courting Drama:  Theatre Renegade pairs up four writers with four directors; these duos then go off and create a 20-minute piece of new writing. The piece is given its debut at the Southwark Playhouse. The winner of this brief will be filling a fifth spot (usually reserved for work commissioned by Theatre Renegade or pieces that they would like to try in front of an audience) and will be paired with a director by Theatre Renegade.

About Theatre Renegade: “Theatre Renegade is a UK-based theatre company that places story, engagement and empathy at the heart of the theatrical experience. With a strong focus on new writing, we also mould and reimagine classic pieces to produce distinctive and unique adaptations.  We are a platform for new work, aiming to forge and build new creative partnerships between writers and directors whilst nurturing them from the very earliest drafts through to realised performance and print. All of our work is based upon the fundamental elements of collaboration and innovation.”

What to submit:  Writers are asked to discuss their proposed piece in under 100 words, and separately to describe their background/training in under 100 words.

How to apply:  Applications can be made via the IdeasTap Brief.  (Note: You must have an IdeasTap profile to apply.)

Deadline:  28 November 2014 at 5pm
