Opportunities: Our Pick of the Week – King’s Cross Award for New Writing from Courtyard Theatre (£10 fee, £5,000 prize)

Each week we look through our pile of writing opportunities to pick out one we think is particularly worth your time. It could be an innovative brief, great prize money, a high-profile company, or just plain fun.

This week’s pick: King’s Cross Award for New Writing from Courtyard Theatre (£10 fee, £5,000 prize)

Description: The 7th King’s Cross Award for New Writing is open to writers of all levels of experience resident in the UK or Republic of Ireland, seeks imaginative, original work, which explores the unique possibilities of writing for the stage. Scripts must be unpublished and currently unperformed. The winning playwright is awarded a £5,000 cash prize, as well as a staged, rehearsed reading. It costs £10 to enter (payable to the CTTC Ltd).

So, what’s so great about it? Well, if you don’t mind shelling out a tenner for the entry fee to this one, you’ll be in with a chance of winning a decent sized cash prize of £5000. Now in its’ 7th year, the award is well established in the world of playwriting competitions and the winner also gets a rehearsed reading at the reputable Courtyard Theatre. You’re allowed to enter up to two plays (although you’d have to pay the entry fee for both) so if you’re torn between two masterpieces, then you could double your chances by submitting both. There’s still a good three weeks before the deadline on 30 June 2015 for you to get your entry together.
