Theatre 503 is one of the UK’s leading homes for new writing, with a commitment to supporting the work of newly emerging writers. In conjunction with the Theatre503 Playwriting Award season, they will be offering a free introductory Playwriting Course for writers with little to no previous experience of writing for the stage. Whatever your level, this is a chance to get free professional training and to take the first steps in writing a play of your own.
About the workshop: Led by director Tom Latter of Theatre 503’s Literary Department and 503 resident playwright Brian Mullin, this six-week course will help budding writers of any age to get their ideas down onto paper. Participants will have the chance to develop short play ideas or extracts from longer works, and to have them performed by professional actors in a final showcase at Theatre 503.
The workshops will run alongside the two shows in the 503 Award season – And Then Come The Nightjars by Bea Roberts, and Valhalla, by Paul Murphy. All workshop participants will be taken to the productions for free in conjunction with the course to see two examples of excellent new writing transformed to the stage.
Course Structure and Dates: Beginning on the week of 7 September, and running weekly until 27 October, two separate classes will be held on Tuesdays 6-8pm, and Thursdays 4-6pm. The course will be structured as follows:
- Week 1 – Where do we start? What makes for an exciting dramatic idea?
- Week 2 – Character & Dialogue
- Week 3 – Scene Structure & Plotting
- Participants will then have the chance to work on their own scripts.
- Weeks 4 & 5 – Workshopping & Feedback on Individual Scripts
- Week 6 – Showcasing of Work in Development
- Week 7 – Celebration & Reflection
Targeted at residents of Wandsworth, this is a chance to build your skills and, in relatively short order, to hear your work presented in front of an audience. No experience is necessary but places are limited.
