DH Ensemble & Solar Bear: (Un)scripted – a series of short films focused on exploring the possibilities of working with deaf and hearing artists

(Un)scripted is a series of short films focused on exploring the possibilities of working with deaf and
hearing artists to use British Sign Language, English and visual storytelling within a theatrical context.

The year 2022 was an incredible year for deaf artists, with the rising popularity of sign language across
stage and screen. Rose Ayling-Ellis won Strictly Come Dancing, the film CODA won the Oscar for Best
Picture and deaf actors performed on stages across the UK from the National Theatre in London to the
National Theatre of Scotland.

In response to this enthusiasm, Deaf and hearing-led theatre company The DH Ensemble, founded in
London in 2013 but based across the UK, have collaborated with Glasgow-based inclusive theatre
company Solar Bear to explore best practice when it comes to working with deaf artists. Funded by
Creative Scotland and Arts Council England, 3 distinct questions were explored over the course of 2
weeks. The resulting series of four short films are a valuable resource for theatre-makers to inform their
own work, offering a taste of what was discovered – tips, ideas and provocations to inform and inspire.
The DH Ensemble and Solar Bear teams see this as the tip of the iceberg – a valuable contribution to the
ongoing conversation rather than a complete solution. There is much still to be explored.
