The East End Literary Salon is a monthly new writing night at Ophelia in Dalston featuring rehearsed readings and semi-staged performances from emerging playwrights. The idea is that the salons are a safe space for emerging playwrights to have their work performed with drinks and discussion afterwards. Styled after Paris in the 1700s and the 1920s, we’re inspired by Madame Geoffrin and Gertrude Stein, with an East End touch.
They are seeking submissions from playwrights for the Salons taking place in December 2014 and through into 2015.
What to submit: There is no theme published in advance – the theme is very much writer-led dictated by the submissions we get each month. Previous themes include mental health, men who hate women and great escapes. Rehearsals take place the day before for 60-90 mins only so if you are seeking an immediate reaction to your text with on the spot dramaturgy then this is the platform for you.
Texts should be 10-20 mins long – extracts are fine, monologues are fine, preferably no more than 3 actors maximum as the stage is very small.
What you pay: Their profit-share model, explained in their own words:
“The model we are using for the nights is taking inspiration from the Free Fringe. To keep the Salons accessible, we operate pay what you can at the end of the night into the bucket. This means that we work on profit share – this is not ideal and we are seeking funding opportunities going forwards, but whatever happens you are guaranteed a drink at the end of the night and feedback from the actors and the director on request.”
How to apply: Please send expressions of interest, queries and submissions to Milla Jackson on eastendliterarysalon@gmail.com.
Deadline: 31 December 2014
