Homegrown | Luton’s New Writing Festival

Homegrown is a new writing festival, showcasing local talent by staging an evening of original short plays, featuring local writers, directors, and actors.

Homegrown is looking for writers, regardless of age or experience to submit their work. If selected, the pieces will be allocated a director, and will be performed by local actors in front of a live audience on Friday 5th July 2024 at Luton Library Theatre.

This festival’s theme is PRIDE.

They’re looking for 10-minute plays inspired by this theme. Go wild! Think outside the box.

Send your scripts to: homegrownluton@gmail.com

See full submission guidelines below.

Scripts will be read by a panel of readers including Adeyinka Akinrinade (Producer & Actor, Riches, Amazon Prime, Champion, Netflix), Teresa Burns (Award-Winning Writer for Stage & Screen), Dana Hudson (Theatre Producer) Lucas Murphy (Actor, Call the Midwife, BBC) and selected scripts will be announced week commencing 10 June 2024.

SCRIPT SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

  • Homegrown is open to all, but the script readers are particularly keen to hear from Luton voices or writers with a connection to Luton, as well as writers from or based in the Home Counties of England.
  • Submissions must be received by midnight on Friday 31st May via email and attached as a PDF or Word document.
  • In your submission email please include a short paragraph, introducing yourself, and your connection to Luton.
  • Only play scripts will be accepted, intended for live performance. Film, TV and Radio scripts will not be accepted.
  • Your piece must be no longer than 10 mins in duration, therefore they would advise a page count of 10-12 pages maximum.
  • Your piece must work with basic sound/lighting and minimal props.
  • Cast size recommendation is 1-4.
  • Adaptations will not be accepted. Homegrown are looking for new plays inspired by this festival’s theme: Pride. But remember the word Pride can mean many different things. The theme should hopefully liberate you, rather than limit!

Deadline: Midnight. Friday 31st May 2024
