Melanin Box Festival is about increasing visibility and artistic opportunities for Black British creatives, whilst highlighting depictions of Black people beyond preconceptions.
The Festival will take place at Theatre Peckham from 4-5 August 2018.
Eligibility: Submissions are open to BME British creatives. The Lead Artist (Writer/Director/Creator) who submits an application must be of African, Caribbean or Indigenous Australian decent. This includes people of dual heritage. Participating/partaking creatives (cast, team etc.) can include ALL heritages and or backgrounds.
Applicants must be 18yrs+; the festival may include adult themes. If your piece includes under 18s contact them via the support page before submitting for an assessment to be made.
What they are looking for: In their own words: ‘Non-conventional narratives, creativity, editing, genres, and ways in which we express them.The stories unheard. The stories undefined. Stories which push and pull boundaries. Disregarding the box. Simple and Wild. Tender and Raged. Stories we haven’t been allowed to tell. We are looking for work which expands the narrative. Whats your lens on the story?’
Prizes: Their top prize includes place at the nextMelanin Stages, along with a £400 bursary.
More prizes will also be announced.
What to submit:
- You piece must be between 10 to15min
- Pieces can be shorts or extracts from a full production
- You may submit multiple applications
Attachment guidelines:
- Attach to form cast details along with script excerpt, 2pages max.
- Or for non-text based work (movement etc), a brief breakdown of style and piece, 1page max, plus visual link to the work or relatable previous work
