These lecture-style workshops offer accessible overviews of key genres and movements in
theatre — from comedy and tragedy to cabaret and LGBTQ theatre. Each session is designed as
a starting point for your own creative practice, or simply as a way to fill in the gaps in your
theatre knowledge. Each session will also be recorded for you to either catch up with if you can’t
make it in person or to return to for reference, slides will also be provided for reference.
Saturday 18th October Musical Theatre
Discover the craft behind the song-and-dance spectacle. This session explores how book, music,
and lyrics work together to tell powerful stories — from classic Broadway to contemporary
British musicals.
Saturday 1st November Comedy
From satire to farce, comedy has always shaped how audiences see the world. Learn about
comedic traditions, structures, and techniques that playwrights use to make us laugh, think, and
reflect.
Sunday, 2nd November Tragedy
Step into the world of high stakes and human flaws. This workshop traces tragedy from the
Greeks to modern drama, exploring how playwrights create catharsis through suffering and fate.
Saturday 8th November Political Theatre
Examine the plays that changed minds and movements. From Brecht to verbatim drama, this
lecture unpacks how theatre has been used as a tool for activism, protest, and social change.
Sunday 16th November Immersive Theatre
Step beyond the proscenium. This workshop looks at how immersive and site-specific theatre
breaks the boundaries between performer and audience, redefining what “live” storytelling can
be.
Saturday 6th December LGBTQ Theatre
Trace the journey of queer voices on stage — from coded characters to groundbreaking plays of
liberation, the AIDS crisis, and today’s diverse, intersectional theatre landscape.
Sunday 14th December Panto!
