Nick Hern Books, specialist theatre publisher, is seeking a Publishing Assistant – an enthusiastic, adaptable new member of the team to contribute to all aspects of their publishing activity. This is an exciting opportunity to gain varied experience at a vibrant and dynamic independent publishing house.
Job description: You will have responsibilities in the day-to-day running of the office, including:
- being the first port of call for customers (via telephone and email)
- processing and supplying orders (including liaising with our distributor)
- handling invoices, payments, couriers, and incoming/outgoing post
You will also manage a large reprint and stock-control operation, keeping all 1000+ NHB titles available and in print, which often requires typesetting and reformatting of existing publications, as well as liaising with suppliers and printers.
You will perform other duties as reasonably requested by the Production Editors, helping to ensure that new titles progress smoothly from typescript to finished publication, which will include some proofreading and copy-checking. There will also be some additional elements of the role working with the Marketing/Sales team, such as attending conferences and events to sell books, preparing monthly sales reports, and helping to maintain the website.
Person specification: You will need to be well-informed about theatre and ideally have had some practical theatre experience (amateur or professional) or academic qualification in theatre or drama. Knowledge and/or experience of publishing and/or bookselling would be an added advantage.
You’ll need to be:
- very organised and good at prioritising competing tasks
- comfortable with customer service over the phone, email and in person
- computer-literate and confident at learning new software
- focused and meticulous, with an excellent attention to detail and a good eye for layout and design
We use Apple Mac hardware and associated software, but experience on other systems is equally valid. Typesetting or design experience, especially using QuarkXpress and Photoshop, would be useful, but not essential.
