The Guildhall School of Music and Drama is inviting applications for the one-year MA in Operamaking for 2020-21. Since it began in 2014, this course has already launched some of the most exciting new practitioners in the world of contemporary opera. Their writers and composers have received commissions from the Royal Opera House, the National Opera Studio, Mahagony Opera, Den Yske Opera, Pittsburg and Boston Opera Festivals, Carnegie Hall, the Eden Project and many more. It is widely recognised within the opera world as a stepping-stone into the industry.
The course is tutored by Professor Julian Philips, Head of Composition at the Guildhall School and Professor Stephen Plaice, the School’s Writer in Residence. At the centre of the course is the creation of a new 25 minute chamber opera for production in June/July 2021, which is performed by singers from the School’s renowned Opera Course.
During the course you would be paired with a composer or librettist to create the new work, as well as following a creative writing pathway with your own work – poetry, prose, dramatic or film script (writers), or creating two further instrumental works (composers). Three writers and three composers will be chosen for the course. Scholarship support will be available to successful candidates.
Deadline: 31st March
