Each week we look through our pile of writing opportunities to pick out one we think is particularly worth your time. It could be an innovative brief, great prize money, a high-profile company, or just plain fun.
This week’s pick: Theatre Royal Stratford East 2015 Perfect Pitch Award for musical theatre writing
Description: following last year’s success, the Perfect Pitch Award for musical theatre writing has now been launched for 2015, in partnership with the Theatre Royal Stratford East. Writers will be asked to apply as individuals and successful candidates will be paired up with a collaborator to begin working on a 10 minute ‘pitch’ of a new musical. The pitches will be presented to a panel of experienced judges from the musical theatre world at a finalist pitching day, where the winners will be chosen. Perfect Pitch and TRSE will provide cast, MD, director, rehearsal space and mentorship for the pitches. The winners will be tasked with writing a new show over a 12 month period and there is a cash award of £12,000.
So, what’s so great about it? If you fancy turning your hand to writing musical theatre and want to work with a big name like the Theatre Royal Stratford East, this one might be for you. You don’t need any experience of writing a musical and if selected, you’ll be paired with a collaborator who will write the songs. All you need is an idea of the musical you’d like to write and some samples of your writing (2 full length plays or screenplays). The winners receive a whopping £12,000 and the opportunity to develop a new show with support from the theatre over a 12 month period. Best of all, it’s free to enter, as long as you get your submission in by 10 July 2015. All is not lost if you do miss the deadline though, as you can pay 25 quid to submit by 20July 2015.
