Opportunities: Our Pick of the Week – Sheer Height Theatre seeking submissions for Women Redressed

Each week we look through our pile of writing opportunities to pick out one we think is particularly worth your time. It could be an innovative brief, great prize money, a high-profile company, or just plain fun.

This week’s pick: Sheer Height Theatre seeking submissions for Women Redressed

Description:  Sheer Height Theatre is running their new writing festival, Women Redressed for a third time  after sell-out successes at Arcola Theatre in March and the Arts Theatre in November. This time round the show will run for two nights at The Park Theatre on Sunday 31st July and Monday 1st August. Sheer Height is a theatre company that aim to retrieve and revive plays that have women’s stories at their hearts and challenge perceived notions of gender. The plot of each piece MUST centre around a lead female character(s), AND/OR must have a gender issue at its core. There must be at least 50:50 gender balance in the cast  or the option for characters’ genders to be fluid.

What’s so great about it?  A little while back, when we posted our call out for scripts for the Dark Horse Festival, we were shocked at how few submissions we were receiving from female writers; this prompted our very own A.C Smith to write a blog post addressing the problem. The article got a fantastic response and sparked some really interesting discussion – it became clear to us that addressing the gender balance in theatre was an important issue for many of you. So, with that in mind, we thought it only right to point out this wonderful opportunity from Sheer Height Theatre who focus on women’s stories and gender issues. You don’t have to be female to enter but the plot of your piece must centre around a lead female character/ have a gender issue at its’ core. They are looking for unproduced plays of no more than 15 minutes in length for performance at the well-respected Park Theatre.
