This popular playwriting course is run by the brilliant playwright and dramaturg Stephen Brown, whose plays include Occupational Hazards (Hampstead Theatre), Faster (Filter Theatre at BAC and 59E59 New York), Does My Society Look Big in This? (Bristol Old Vic) and Future Me (Theatre503 and Public Theatre New York). Stephen has been a core teacher at the Rose for eight years and many of his students have gone on to work as professional playwrights.
About the course: over twelve weeks you will be taken through every step of writing a play, from character development and structure, to its professional application. In a small group you will analyse classic and modern works, as well as taking part in creative writing exercises and receiving individual feedback on your work. At the end of term, they invite experienced theatre directors and a group of actors to workshop scenes from your plays, giving you a unique opportunity to see how new writing is approached by professionals in the rehearsal room.
Whether you write as part of your job, or just fancy putting pen to paper for the first time, whether you end up with a fully polished play, or a score of ideas, this is a really enjoyable and focused springboard for your creativity.
