The Alfred Bradley Bursary Award 2023

The Alfred Bradley Bursary Award is an opportunity for writers based in the North of England who are new to writing for audio. It offers a £5,000 bursary to the winner as well as the chance of a Radio 4 Drama commission.

The Award was established in 1992 to commemorate the life and work of Alfred Bradley, the distinguished BBC Radio Drama Producer and is run by Audio Drama North in conjunction with the BBC Writersroom.

Previous winners include Lee Hall (Billy Elliot, War Horse), Peter Straughan (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Debt), Cat Jones (Doctors, Waterloo Road) and Furquan Akhtar (Wolfe, The Bay) who have all gone on to have huge success across radio, TV and film.

Applications for the Alfred Bradley Bursary Award will open at 12 noon on Monday 27th February 2023 and close at 12 noon on Tuesday 11th April 2023.

To apply you must:

  • Reside in the North of England on a permanent / full time basis. The North of England is defined by the Boundary Committee for England which includes the North East, North West, Yorkshire and Humber.
  • Be aged 18 or over.
  • Submit an original and complete Drama or Comedy/Drama script written for radio, TV, stage or film at a minimum length of 30 pages (excluding title or character pages). Please be mindful that scripts will be assessed on their suitability for Audio Drama.  Pure narrative comedy or sitcoms are not eligible.
