Truth Telling – 4 Week Online Writing Course with Conor Patrick Carroll
Summary
Do you have a story to tell? About something that happened to you or perhaps someone you know? A story you believe will inspire, move or excite people?
I’m Conor Patrick Carroll and I have been writing for stage and screen for over a decade and only in recent years have I felt compelled to delve into my own personal experiences for my writing projects. This process has been deeply emotional and yet yielded some of my proudest work. Through this journey, I have gained a number of insights which I am eager to share with other writers and this workshop acts as a distillation of those learnings.
In this four week online course, we will explore the techniques I have devised and implemented in my own writing to inspire your creativity. You will learn innovative methods to engage with your own personal material in a way that is enlivening whilst also protecting yourself.
If you choose to take part in the course, it will provide the following:
-
A variety of playful and insightful exercises designed to unlock the storytelling potential of your personal material.
-
A comprehensive analysis of various true stories in popular culture, in order to contextualise your own storytelling choices and how you want to tell your truth
-
A safe space for you to mine your own personal material and also delicately speak with others about their experiences.
-
A small close-knit group of like-minded writers to encourage your writing and forge your own writing community.
-
Plenty of opportunities to share your writing and also receive considered and insightful feedback from your peers and myself on your work.
Exploring these topics can often prove difficult for a number of reasons but this process is designed to be a nurturing one which gives you the space to share as little or as much as you feel comfortable with.
What you will learn within the course can be applied to any form of creative writing, whether this is a novel, stage play or screenplay. It can also serve as a useful base to delve into your personal material before choosing what storytelling form best suits you.
I want you to finish the course feeling empowered to tell your stories with grace, dignity and precision. I want you to find the reason why this story needs to be told and why you are the person to tell it. Most of all, I want to create a space for you to play which will enable you to deepen your connection to your own writing practice.
Testimonials
Previous attendees of my Truth Telling workshops have said:
“I found the workshop really useful as it pushed me to truly question why I write my stories…The workshop motivated me to get back to writing with a clearer goal and helpful writing tools! The class felt like such a safe/non-judgmental space and it was amazing hearing everyone else’s insights and stories”
“I tend to write in a very linear way because the stories I write usually play out in my head as if I am watching a film. But this helped me to consider writing in a more reflective way.”
“It’s so inspiring to listen to other people’s stories…Sometimes, you need something like that to start writing, and these exercises not only help you get in the right mindset, but they also encourage you to explore ideas about characters or situations that you might not have thought of otherwise”
