Following four sold-out shows at the Bread and Roses Theatre, Unfolded, a new-writing night with a focus on current affairs, is doing a show at the Southwark Playhouse, on 3rd December 2018.
They’re looking for eight, 10-15 minute pieces based on news from the most recent cycle of current affairs. We want stories that go beyond the headlines, that highlight how the news impacts regular people day-to-day.
Plays have previously covered issues as broad as LGBT asylum claims, homelessness in Cardiff, the impact of Brexit on dating, and domestic slavery in India. This set of plays could include pieces highlighting life in Maduro’s Venezuela, the rise of “emotional-support goldfish” on airlines, or new prostitution zones in Leeds. Our goal is to raise awareness of less-told stories at a time when magazines and newspapers are unable to do so due to cuts.
What they are looking for:
- Stand alone shorts or extracts that need no further explanation as part of a longer play.
- Have a maximum of four characters.
- Absolutely no longer than 15 minutes.
- Humour is as welcome as tragedy.
- Entertaining with a nod to, rather than deep dive into current affairs.
Things they are not looking for:
- Long, rambling diatribes about the pros and cons of Brexit/Corbyn/Trump.
They hope to promote voices of those rarely heard and would love to hear from playwrights originally from countries where news is particularly interesting right now (e.g. Zambia, China, Ireland).
Writers should be in a position to source their own actors and directors, and to facilitate rehearsals, but they can help with finding actors if needed. Writers should be able to attend the show and dress rehearsal, both on Monday 3 December.
