Happy New Year!
This month, London Playwrights is running WrAP2026 (Write A Play) and we’d love for you to follow along. We’ll be posting recaps on the Monday following every week (that’s this post you’re reading right now!) and other exciting content. I’ll be following along on the challenge and including some of my reflections in these recaps. If you’d like to receive writing prompts to your email inbox everyday of January, and participate in workshops and write-alongs, however, it’s not too late to join the challenge here.
This week we kicked things off with exercises aimed at figuring out what exactly we’d like to write. Taking the time (these four days!) to really question my interests and motivations as a writer wasn’t something I’d thought to do before. Usually, I’d just dive into a piece and then lose momentum halfway through. This time, though, it’s not just the general what I want to write that I’m reflecting on, but a deep dive into the specifics of the topic and even which form and genre is best for it.
It’s inspiring to hear everyone’s thoughts on the exercises in the WhatsApp group chat and to see which prompts spoke particularly to people, or what music they’re listening to as they work. I’ve also been taking this week to set my writing goals for the year alongside my other new year’s resolutions. For example, one thing I’d like to work on is building a sustainable writing practice for myself and including space for lots of experimentation and play within that. What are yours? One of the prompts I found really helpful this week comes from Day 1, “What kind of play would you like to write?” Be really imaginative with this one and we look forward to seeing what you come up with this year!
