Do you want to be a writer? Would you like to have your work performed at the Royal Exchange Theatre? BBC Radio Manchester and the Royal Exchange Theatre are launching a talent search for writers to mark 100 years since the first women got the vote. They’re seeking a “Manchester Monologue” that looks ahead to the future for women – and Helen Pankhurst (the great granddaughter of suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst) will be among those judging the entries.
What to submit: you are asked to submit a single voiced piece that is written for performance (e.g. a monologue which can be a script, spoken word or poetry). The theme is ‘Women and the Future’ and your writing should show a local connection to Greater Manchester. Your piece should be up to, but no longer than 3 minutes when read aloud.
What you get: the five winning monologues will be performed at a showcase event at the Royal Exchange Theatre The work performed alongside award-winning poet Jo Bell. Prior to this the winning writers will have the opportunity to develop their piece with advice and mentorship from the Royal Exchange Theatre.
Judging criteria:
- The quality and accomplishment of the writing.
- The strength of the idea based on the theme ‘Women and the Future’
- The strength of the character’s “voice”.
- Local relevance to Greater Manchester
Who can apply: you don’t need any previous writing experience. All entries must be original and not previously published or performed (this includes online). You need to be over 18 years old.
