Call out for Young Writer in Residence for Takeover Festival 2020 (paid £400)

What is it?

The Customs House South Shields is currently preparing for their Takeover Festival for 2020 and are seeking to appoint this year’s Young Writer in Residence. Each year The Customs House is taken over by emerging artists and arts professionals aged up to 25 years of age for a week of theatre, cinema, music, dance, poetry, hip hop and visual art. This year, they will build on the previous year’s successes of Reece Connolly’s WORMTOWN, and Isolation by last year’s appointed writer, Elijah Young.

What will happen?

The chosen writer will be mentored by eminent playwright Tom Wells. The Young Writer in Residence’s play will be staged in their Main House as the finale piece of their Takeover Festival on 29 May. The total fee allocated to the writer for the opportunity is £400 payable upon submission of the final draft.

What are they looking for?

They are seeking submissions which has young people’s voices at its heart, and a narrative that is firmly rooted in the north east.

  • run between 45-60 minutes with no interval
  • suitable for audiences aged 14+.
  • Roles for 8 young actors (these may be single parts or multi-roles)
  • final draft would need to be completed by 4 May.
  • Young Writer in Residence must be aged 25 and under
  • must be from/live in the north east of England.
How to apply?

Eligible writers should submit the following to Fiona@customshouse.co.uk:

Name, date of birth, and a brief bio.

Title of play, a brief synopsis and up to 15 minutes of their play.

Deadline: Monday 16th March 5pm
