NEW APP OPENS UP LONDON’S STREETS AS STAGE FOR ACTORS AND PLAYWRIGHTS
PLATFORM AIMS TO BUILD COMMUNITY OF ACTORS, PLAYWRIGHTS AND SOUND DESIGNERS
A new app has been developed which is bringing London’s streets to life with drama, crime and romance whilst providing a creative outlet for playwrights, actors and sound designers.
‘Walking Plays’ is a platform that enables local playwrights to create and upload their audio plays, which are then available to purchase and download. The plays are set in and around London’s boroughs and the audience is encouraged to listen whilst following directions and walking the streets in which the stories are set.
As well as providing an exciting new experience for audiences, the platform is enabling playwrights and actors with an outlet for their creativity. Similar to Spotify, the platform is a new way in which playwrights can get exposure for their work and it offers actors other outlets for their creativity other than theatres, film and television.
With dramatic sound effects and trained actors, Walking Plays is a truly immersive experience that delivers gripping drama on London’s streets. There is the opportunity for people to enjoy the plays together, meeting in locations such as pubs, parks and London’s attractions where the drama is acted out. Alternatively plays can be listened to at home.
The cost for each play is five pounds with the revenue being split 50/50 between the writer and the platform. Walking Plays asks for submissions from playwrights and requests fully produced plays set in the most interesting parts of the world with stories that immerse the listener. Playwrights who need help in producing an audio play can also submit their stories which could then be produced by the Walking Plays team.
Founder of Walking Plays, Del Currie, who also built the app says, “We hope this app will democratise playwrighting, encouraging writers to get their work published and importantly receive a fair share of the revenue. As well as providing an immersive experience for audiences, we see Walking Plays as a tool to build a global community of creatives, with the ambition to bring this platform to cities worldwide.”
Jack Pepper writer of ‘A Scandal On Fleet Street’ says, “It’s tough for playwrights to get their work produced, but Walking Plays makes it possible to get our material out there in an incredibly immersive format”.
There are plans for the platform to be available globally in cities across the world.
