IdeasTap Workshop – Write Now 6: Synopsis Surgery

Write Now 6: Synopsis Surgery

Get it right before you write! When entering scripts into a competition the first thing readers see and the best test of a play’s strength is it’s synopsis. Is there a strong story? Do the characters leap out? Is the playwright telling us something about the world we live in? Do we care?

With the Write Now 6 competition now open the Jack Studio Theatre is looking for striking new plays.

This workshop led by Literary Manager and playwright, David Bottomley, is about honing a workable blueprint for your play and a tag line to say what your play is really about. Pitch and kick ideas around and get feedback from group discussion to move your play forward.

David Bottomley

David is a playwright, workshop leader and Literary Manager of the Jack Studio Theatre. He founded the Jack Writers’ Workshop in 2010 as a dynamic hub for new writing to support playwrights of all levels in developing short plays from scratch to performance on the Jack stage.

He has been involved in developing new writing since becoming a founding member and Writers Group Director of the London Playwright’s Collective (LPC) in 2006 based at Theatre503.

He has tutored writing workshops for IDEO, Write Now Festivals, Spread the Word, Crisis and Battersea Literary Festivals.

Plays include ‘On Tour’ The Union Theatre, Conceptual Liaisons, Camden People’s Theatre’s, Late Swallows, reading Theatre503, Waterton’s Wild Menagerie, reading Theatre503, Message in A Bottle, one man show, Sweet Venues, Edinburgh Fringe Festival and The Peacock and The Nightingale world premiere at the San Diego International Fringe Festival 2014.

Shortlisted for the Nick Darke Award 2012 for his play Waterton’s Wild Menagerie.

The Write Now Festival

The festival began at the Jack in 2010, and has run for five successive years under the artistic direction of Kate Bannister. Each year it looks to find, develop and produce the most exciting, diverse and significant work of new and emerging writers who have a connection to the south east of London.

One selected play will be given a full production at the Jack Studio Theatre in May 2015. Two further plays will be given a week’s workshop time and three staged readings during the Festival. In addition each of the 3 winning writers is allocated development time with a director and dramaturg to examine and explore their play further; financial support to attend rehearsals; and career development and advice.

In 2015 we are looking for bold new voices and stories that engage with and reflect contemporary culture and society. All playwrights who submit must have a strong connection to south east London.

We are now accepting submissions of scripts. The deadline for this year’s applications is Friday 30 January 2015.

Full guidelines and a 2015 application form are available to download on our website.

We are also running this session on the 4th December.
