Lockdown: From Idea To Play with nationally acclaimed Playwright David Lane
Dates: Sunday 8th May and Sunday 15th May
Time: 10am to 4pm
Location: Commonweal School, Old Town, Swindon, SN1 4JE
Across two day-long workshops, with a week’s writing time in-between for participants to complete an original 5 – 10-minute script, playwright and dramaturg (and Gatecrash Associate Artist) David Lane will challenge you with intensive practical exercises, group discussions and analysis of existing work to encourage you to answer these and many other questions, getting you off the mark with the idea you’ve been dying to write.
About the facilitator: An experienced facilitator and professional playwright, David has been commissioned by many of the South West’s leading regional theatres including Half Moon Theatre, Theatre Royal Plymouth, Chichester Festival Theatre, Salisbury Playhouse, Cheltenham Everyman and The Egg. Commissions for adult audiences include productions at Theatre 503, Theatre West and Tobacco Factory Theatre. David is currently developing work for national and international touring and has initiated and contributed to writer development programmes across the UK and is an Associate Teacher at Bristol University.
About the workshop: Taking the short-form play as a working model for the first workshop, you’ll explore how to succinctly contain a story and make quick and strong writing choices, working on an idea that you’ll have brought with you at the beginning of the sessions and developing it with a strong dramaturgical framework. Between the two sessions you’ll write a first draft of the play, which we’ll then read aloud, discuss and feedback upon in the second session to allow you to strengthen the script and understand better how to move it forwards.
By the end of the two days you’ll have completed an original short play, equipped yourself with new skills for writing and re-writing, acquired a stronger sense of your craft and unique qualities as a writer, and received professional feedback on your work.
This is an ideal short course for anybody new to writing or with some previous experience, but importantly who also has an idea that they’d like to bring to the table and commit to working on for the duration of the sessions.
