The Pros and Cons of Playwriting Residencies
24 February 2015, 11am-12.30pm
IdeasTap, The Woolyard, 52 Bermondsey St.

Papatango Artistic Director George Turvey and Resident Playwright Samantha Potter discuss the point of residencies at companies or venues for playwrights.

Papatango Theatre Company was founded in 2007 to find the best and brightest new talent in the UK with an absolute commitment to bringing such work to the stage. The Papatango New Writing Prize was launched in 2009, which is unique among new writing initiatives in guaranteeing its winner a full production on the professional stage. In 2014 Papatango opened the inaugural position of Resident Playwright, supported with a BBC Theatre Fellowship and the Fenton Arts Trust. Papatango discoveries have gone on to premiere worldwide.

George Turvey co-founded Papatango Theatre Company in 2007 and became the sole Artistic Director in January 2012. He trained as an actor at ALRA.

Samantha Potter is the 2015 Papatango Resident Playwright, and a Creative Associate at Headlong. Her debut play, MUCKY KID, for which she received a Most Promising New Playwright nomination at the Off West End Awards, opened at Theatre 503 in November 2013. Her second play, LOCAL BOY, was written on attachment at the National Theatre Studio and she has recently completed a new play, LOVE ME TO THE BONES.
