LPW Play Club 2020: Lockdown Edition – A Taste of Honey

Announcing a bonus edition of Play Club for 2020!

In light of these isolating times, we thought we’d run an extra play club, open to everyone; LPB member or not. We’ve selected a classic text which should be easy to nab a copy of online and we’re inviting everyone and anyone to write a short, 10 page play in response to what they’ve read. We’ll have a reading week, followed by our submission window opening, in which time you can submit your shiny new play!

Our lockdown play will be…

A Taste of Honey by Shelagh Delaney

Shelagh Delaney’s A Taste of Honey is a modern classic; dealing with themes of family, adolescence and social issues. Originally produced in 1958, A Taste of Honey was Delaney’s first play, written at the age of 19 against the backdrop of working-class Manchester life. The play follows the adolescent Jo and her optimism through her trials. It explores her relationship with her irresponsible mum, Helen, a sailor who leaves Jo pregnant and Geoffrey, the homosexual art student who moves in to help Jo with the baby. A Taste of Honey has been adapted into a successful film and has enjoyed many revivals over the years; most recently at the National Theatre in 2019.

You can get a copy of the play from Amazon for free with a trial of Kindle Unlimited and it’s also available in various other forms on Amazon, Bloomsbury and Drama Online.

We challenge you to write a 10 page play (12 font size, please!) in direct response to what you’ve read.

Our submission window in response to A Taste of Honey will be open from
Monday 13th April –  Sunday 26th April

(So please don’t send us scripts before then)

A post will be live on the blog and on socials once the window is open with full details of how to submit, but until then, happy reading! And if you are interested in LPB membership and gaining access to a variety of materials, resources and exclusive opportunities, sign up now for less than the price of a coffee per month!

    Hi there,
Does the play need to be exactly 10 pages or is there a minimum and maximum allowance? Many thanks.

Good question! Approximately 10 pages is fine, so we would be happy to accept anything between 8-12 pages.
