Opportunities – Pick of the Week: Airplays developing radio dramas about Empire Windrush (£1,000 commission)

Each week we look through our pile of writing opportunities to pick out one we think is particularly worth your time. It could be an innovative brief, great prize money, a high-profile company, or just plain fun.

This week’s pick: Airplays developing radio dramas about Empire Windrush (£1,000 commission)

Description:

Airplays is a brand new collaboration between BBC Radio Leeds and West Yorkshire Playhouse in association with Leeds College of Music that puts radio drama centre stage.

Do you have a story to tell about migration? WYPH are looking for writers of all backgrounds and all levels of experience to send in ideas for original 15 minute-long fictional radio plays. The theme is a celebration of the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the Empire Windrush in 1948.

What’s so great about it? If you want the chance to write about a topical brief, have your work developed by WYPH, performed live to an audience at Leeds College of Music and recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio Leeds – oh, and get paid £1000 too, then this opportunity is not to be missed!

Chosen writers get to work with WYPH developing their idea into a short play over the course of five months, working closely with West Yorkshire Playhouse’s Furnace artistic development programme.

They’re currently looking for proposals of original ideas on the the theme of the Empire Windrush but how you interpret that theme is up to you. You’ve got until 10 May at 6pm to get your ideas in, so get thinking!
