Participation in Writing Workshops, Midland Actors Theatre

CALL FOR WRITERS TO TAKE PART IN SCRIPT DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS

Midland Actors Theatre is looking for a group of writers, to develop ideas for a new play, loosely based on Homer’s Iliad.

The Iliad is recognised as the first great book, and the first great book about the suffering and loss of war. We want to explore how the text still resonates today, in the light of modern-day conflicts and wars.

We will hold a script development period with the writing team. We are interested in exploring a range of written forms, and so we welcome the involvement of poets, novelists, performance artists, journalists, etc. as well as playwrights. We also hope to involve writers from diverse backgrounds, to explore the ways that Homer’s text resonates in different cultural contexts.

The workshops will be led by playwright David Calcutt. The writers will be presented with key scenes from the Iliad to investigate, interpret, and reimagine. We will also hold a series of workshops with a group of actors, to try out some of the ideas developed by the writing team. The workshop period will begin November 2022 and will culminate in a rehearsed performance/reading in May 2023. Our aim, ultimately, is to develop the framework for a new play which we hope to produce in the future.

MAT is now putting together an application for a grant from ACE for the script development period. At this stage, we welcome expressions of interest from writers who would like to be part of the process.

If you are interested in taking part, please send a CV to: david@midlandactorstheatre.com / Tel.: 07946 006511.
