Papatango Resident Playwright 2017 (£2000 seed commission)

The search for Papatango’s 2017 Resident Playwright begins. The residency provides a £2000 seed commission, one-to-one dramaturgy, and script development workshops with professional actors to complete a brilliant new play, with an option for a full production by Papatango.

Papatango says: “Our first resident playwright, May Sumbwanyambe, saw us produce and publish his play After Independence at the Arcola Theatre to rave reviews.

“He then won the Alfred Fagon Audience Award in a ceremony at the National Theatre.

“Applications for the residency are, like all Papatango opportunities, completely free and anonymous. Any resident of the UK or Ireland can apply regardless of experience. ”

What to submit: On your application you’ll need to provide:

  • A cover letter of not more than 500 words in total that describes the play you would like to write while resident playwright, and explains what the residency would mean for you.
  • Two samples of your playwriting, no more than 10 pages each. These can be extracts from separate full-length plays, different scenes from the same full-length play, or complete short plays. These may be plays you have had staged or read, or plays that are hidden in your bottom drawer. You may even write them just for this application. It’s up to you.

How to apply: Guidance, including anonymity principles and formatting, will be published in May.

Deadline: Applications must be submitted between 22 May-1 June. Interviews with shortlisted candidates will take place on Friday 9 June.
