Award-winning, BAFTA-nominated executive producer Kathleen Beedles is offering two IdeasTap members the chance to attend a full-day practical workshop on the craft of storylining. Places normally cost £240.
The ability to turn story ideas into, “What if this happens next…?” keeps long-running shows at the top of the ratings, and is a craft that has underpinned the careers of successful script editors, writers, producers and commissioners. Paul Abbott, Sally Wainwright, Frank Cottrell Boyce, Kay Mellor, Jimmy McGovern and Tony Jordan all started their careers in this way.
This Storylining Continuing Drama Workshop is a practical process where you will join other writers (maximum 10) in storylining a fictional soap Kathleen has created. You will write a storyline, and then have a personal edit the following week. The winners of this brief will also receive a PDF booklet with invaluable insights and insider tips.
Though this workshop you’ll learn how to pitch, how to write treatments, how to lose your fear of the blank page by writing on demand and to short deadlines, how to generate endless ideas, how to think on your feet with fellow writers, and, most importantly of all, how to understand story beats and narrative turning points.
The judges are looking for someone who has strong storytelling instincts and a passion for telling a good story.
Before applying, please make sure you are available on Saturday 16 August, 10am to 5pm for the workshop. It will take place in north London.
How to apply: you’ll need to sign up to IdeasTap where you can fill in an online application form.
