Tamasha Masterclass: Playwriting with Teenagers

An intensive one-day course with Artistic Director Fin Kennedy for those new to working with young people. You’ll look at the process of co-creating plays with groups of teenagers in a school or youth theatre environment.

The morning will look at the playwright as workshop leader, generating ideas with a group through creative exercises – both written and improvisation based – which the playwright then takes the lead in scripting. The afternoon will look at supporting teenagers to do their own scriptwriting.

The workshop will include a case study of Fin Kennedy’s pioneering work at Mulberry School for Girls in Tower Hamlets, with an insight into the creative exercises behind two volumes of award-winning plays.

Participants will be left with a suite of imaginative playwriting exercises to take away and apply to their own work: a practical exercise within the session will work towards structuring a Scheme of Work for a playwriting course for young people.

Who is it for? The workshop will suit emerging professional playwrights with an interest in working in schools; established Drama teachers and PGCE drama teachers-in-training; and youth theatre leaders looking to refresh or hone their skills in playwriting and teaching playwriting.

This intensive workshop is for up to 12 emerging or aspiring playwrights who are interested in exploring working with young people, and who have a strong interest in stories that are often left untold. We would particularly welcome applications from writers with diverse cultural experiences.

Course fee:  The workshop fee is £50 for the day. Payment must be received in advance, upon confirmation that you have been allocated a place.
