The Customs House – The Takeover Young Writer in Residence

The Young Writer in Residence has become an important talent development opportunity for the The Customs House, with many of the previous alumni going on to be represented by theatrical agents and creating huge interest in the writer’s work.

The chosen writer will be mentored by a professional playwright and will have their work staged in The Customs House Main Auditorium as the finale of The Takeover Festival on Friday 31st May 2024.

They are keen to hear stories that aren’t usually seen on stage, and are seeking submissions which have young people’s voices at their heart, and a narrative that is firmly rooted in the North East of England. The final version would run between 45-60 minutes, with no interval and would be suitable for audiences aged 14+. There would need to be roles for five young actors (17-25 years), these may play single parts or as multi-roles.

Key dates for chosen writer following the initial submission deadline:

  • 5th April – Deadline for submission of a detailed synopsis, character list & suitable audition sides.
  • 24th – 25th April – Auditions for actors at The Customs House (the chosen writer will be invited to be part of the audition panel).
  • 6th May – Final draft submitted.

Because of their funding, the Young Writer in Residence would need to be aged 25 or under and be from/live in the North East of England.

The total fee allocated to the writer for the opportunity is £1000.
