The Women in Theatre Lab

The Women in Theatre Lab is the new UK version of US and Australian models, providing a
ongoing paid pipeline to support UK female playwrights from ideas to first drafts to full
commission/productions.

The Lab offers:
 10 £1000 seed commission to support emerging and mid-career UK female
playwrights in its first year
 Advice from leading female playwrights including April de Angelis, Timberlake
Wertenbaker, Suzie Miller (author of “Prima Facie” starring Jodie Comer), Dorothy
Fortenberry (writer and Executive Producer of “The Handmaids’ Tale” and
“Extrapolations” starring Meryl Streep)
 Advice from leading women working in theatre on business skills including BAFTA
winning actress Joanna Scanlan, CEO of Shakespeare’s Globe Stella Kanu, Emmy
winning actress Doon Mackichan (co-creator of “Smack the Pony”)
 Craft sessions and one to one dramaturgy
 A showcase at the Jermyn Street Theatre at the end of the programme.
The programme is run by Her Story Productions, the new company supporting women
working in theatre, television and film led by Polly Kemp, founder of ERA 50:50 (the equal
representation for actresses organisation whose supporters include Emma Thompson and
Phoebe Waller-Bridge) and Jennifer Tuckett, the former Research Literary Director at Sphinx
Theatre who created the one off Sphinx 30 programme for Sphinx’s 30th anniversary in
partnership with 15 leading theatres. Jermyn Street Theatre, the West End’s Studio Theatre,
and The Writers’ Guild of Great Britain are the other partners. Supporters include actress
Gemma Arterton.
