Verbatim technique workshop. Saturday 4 March (10-6) and Sunday 5 March 2017(11-4).
Bread & Roses Theatre, 68 Clapham Manor St, Clapham, London, SW4 6DZ.
About the course: Playwright Paul Kalburgi is offering a verbatim technique workshop – a form of documentary theatre in which plays are constructed from the precise words spoken by people interviewed about a particular event or topic.
This technique allows the playwright to create rich and authentic writing by capturing the natural rhythm of a contributor’s speech and by absorbing the textures, sounds and fabric of a real life story.
Paul Kalburgi offers insight into the practise on his verbatim plays The Countess (Blue Elephant Theatre, London, UK) and In The Tall Grass (Bishop Arts Theatre, Dallas, USA).
What you get: The weekend will begin with an introduction to the technique, legalities and logistics of creating a verbatim play. Selected scenes from famous verbatim works will be screened and discussed and participants will also benefit from practical exercises and handouts. You will be expected to complete a short assignment overnight.
