#WrAP is back for 2021! Write a play in January!

**ALL EMAILS AVAILABLE ON THE MEMBERS’ SITE! IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO GET SOME INSPIRATION!**

I think we can all agree that we’re done with 2020, right? With that in mind, we’re really excited to announce that WrAP (or, Write A Play) is back for 2021! For the 4th year running, we’ll be challenging you to write a first draft of a play in January, whilst providing all the prompts you need to get you going  – direct to your inbox!

If you’ve been chipping away at new ideas during lockdown, why not put them to good use by committing to writing a new play for the new year? Or perhaps the events of 2020 have left you with no time to write at all, in which case, WrAP is just what you need to give yourself a creative boost! Or maybe…2021 is the year to write your first ever play?!

You don’t need to have an idea in mind to take part (but you absolutely can build on an existing idea if you want to) and there is no prep required – just sign up before 1st January 2020 to receive the writing prompts.

It’s been really wonderful that we’ve been able to continue supporting new writers and keep our writing community going during this difficult year – lets keep the solidarity going by writing some amazing new plays together for 2021!

*This year, we’ll also be including some useful tips on writing for audio and for online performances – so whether you want to write a play for stage, radio, Zoom or TV, WrAP is for you!*

So, what is #WrAP?

#WrAP (Write a Play)  is our annual January playwriting challenge and it’s back for the fourth year running. Throughout the entire month of January, we provide prompts, exercises, mini online workshops, and inspiration to support you in writing a whole draft of a play from start to finish. All of this is sent directly to your inbox to challenge you and spur you on.

Since it began in 2018, almost 500 of you have taken part in #WrAP – completing first drafts, a few scenes, or simply coming up with ideas that you’ve been able to then work on throughout the year. Some of these ideas have already been developed into bigger things.

The feedback we’ve had has been overwhelming, with writers telling us that whether they finished their scripts or not, #WrAP gave their writing the boost they needed for the year ahead. You don’t need to complete your whole script to succeed in WrAP – the idea is that however much you write, whether it’s 10 pages or 100 – you’ll still have more than you started with at the beginning of the month!

Members will also be invited to submit their #WrAP2021 plays to us for consideration for our development opportunities in the Spring – more to come on that soon!

Join us for #WrAP2021

We’re currently working away to make #WrAP2021 bigger and better than ever, and we’ll be making more announcements about this over the coming weeks (so do keep your eye on our blog and follow us on Instagram @londonplaywrights & Twitter @LDNPlaywrights).

If you want to challenge yourself, get some inspiration and write with the support of a playwriting community, then join us for #WrAP2021.

It doesn’t matter if it’s your first play or your fiftieth, or if you have minimal spare time: all that matters is that you want to give it a go. After all, even if you only get a few scenes written, or a rough first draft, it’s still more than you had at the start of January.

How to sign up:

If you want to take part, you’ll need to be a London Playwrights’ member, which takes just a couple of minutes to do and costs as little as £3.63 (and by doing so, you’ll have access to lots of other member benefits including online courses, plus you’ll be helping to support the next generation of playwrights – find out more here).

Members can then simply login and head to the sign up page to receive #WrAP2021 emails (we’ll also be sending out a reminder nearer the time!)

Why do I need to be a member to take part? Our small membership fee covers our costs and allows us to keep our organisation going – from creating new resources to putting the Weekly Opportunities Round-up together, we are supported by the generosity of our members  – Find out more here.

I’m a member trying to sign up for WRAP 2021. I’ve tried all sorts of things including logging in several times. Could you tell me if I’m signed up? Or could you simply put me down? Doc Andersen-Bloomfield

      1. Hi Kimberley.
I have been having a hard time trying to sign up for Wrap 2021. Please can you put my name down for it. Thanks. Danny.

  2. As a complete novice I would have thought the best way to write a play would be to start at the final curtain and work towards the opening.

    1. Kimberley Andrews

You absolutely could do that if it works for you – interesting point actually as the final curtain should definitely reflect your initial idea/ message/ reason for writing.

  3. David. You can start anywhere. Perhaps write your favourite scenes first, then decide on your opening scene when you’ve got something to work with. I am halfway into a play, and have just decided that my opening scene doesn’t work and I should start further in. Keep it fluid till you know your play.
