This week the focus was on breaking our plan down into its smaller, more manageable elements (acts and scenes) and getting started on writing. For me the biggest challenge is always in structuring my plays, so going back to the basics with the 5-act structure was useful this week!
I also got to speak to and hear from lots of playwrights in the community too. A highlight was the write-along session Tim hosted (unfortunately, I didn’t manage to attend the second one hosted by Emily over the weekend). In the short conversation after our hour of individual writing, we spoke about the importance of finding a balance between being a planning-writer and an on-the-fly writer (Stephen Jeffreys writes helpfully about this in his book on playwriting!) I also had chats with Etheri, Sierra, and Roberta, three exciting writers doing WrAP this year. I’ll be writing mini profiles of each writer and a few others and posting them throughout the next month. It’s lovely to hear from writers around the world, and to experience this diversity of approaches and opinions.
For now, happy writing and thanks for reading, till next week!
This month, London Playwrights is running WrAP2026 (Write A Play) and we’d love for you to follow along. We’ll be posting recaps on the Monday following every week and other exciting content. If you’d like to receive writing prompts to your email inbox everyday of January, and participate in workshops and write-alongs, however, it’s not too late to join the challenge here.
