The Orange Tree aims to challenge, move and amaze with a bold and continually evolving mix of new and re-discovered plays in their unique in-the-round space.
They have presented new plays by writers in formative moments of their careers, and provoked radical re-evaluations of others by revisiting earlier work. Martin Crimp, Vaclav Havel and Alistair McDowall have sat alongside rediscoveries of Doris Lessing, Harley Granville Barker, Susan Glaspell and Githa Sowerby, amongst many others. They are committed to providing a home for establishing playwrights by offering opportunities to develop, make connections and have their work seen through our Writers Collective, and workshops and readings where possible.
Their current script submission window will run until 25 September 2015.
How it works: Your play will be read by one of the artistic team and considered for production or development at the theatre. Unfortunately they cannot offer feedback on all work received, although they may correspond directly with writers whose work has promise but which needs development or might be better suited to another organisation.
They regret that we cannot respond to writers whose work we are unable to pursue, and if you have not heard within three months of submitting your play please assume you have been unsuccessful.
What to submit: In their own words:
“We’d like to read work which might ignite our unique, intimate, in-the-round space. Writers should have some idea of the kind of work we have programmed in the past. We advise you not to send the very first draft of your play. We can only accept one play per writer.”
How to apply: Please send your play as a PDF or Word document to literary@orangetreetheatre.co.uk, and include a brief covering letter, a synopsis and your writing CV.
If you have had at least one play professionally produced and would like to be considered for the Writers Collective please indicate this clearly, and include details of a referee who knows your work.
