BBC Radio Essex Playwright of the Year open for submissions

BBC Essex  is open for submissions for its Playwright of the Year 2017 competition.

It is looking for  a 15 minute fictional radio play with an Essex connection to be recorded at a special performance later in the year for broadcast on BBC Essex.

It is an opportunity to hear your work on the radio.

Eligibility: You don’t need any previous writing experience. All entries need to be an original piece of fiction not previously published or performed. You can enter on your own or as a group, but you can only enter once.

You need to be over 18 years old and resident in the UK.

What to submit: Your 15 minute play. Judges are looking for :

  • Originality
  • Plot
  • Storytelling
  • Suitability for radio listening
  • Creative use of location
  • Writing technique
  • Enjoyment

How to apply:  Email your entry to essex@bbc.co.uk, send it in by post, or deliver by hand (between the hours of 9am and 5pm) to BBC Essex, 198 New London Road, Chelmsford, Essex, CM2 9AB.

In the body of the email or with the script provide your name, contact telephone number and confirmation you have read and understood the terms and conditions.

  1. I hate to sound like a money grubbing hack, but is the BBC paying its usual fee to the winner of the Radio Essex Playwright of the Year? There’s no mention of money on any of the sites.

  2. Who would I contact at the Beeb? Head of Drama? Contracts? Writers Room? The place is a bleedin’ Kafka-esque nightmare!
