Brave New Worlds seeking 5-10 plays for ‘BALLS: acts of bravery in a gendered world’

“Balls, balls, balls. You’re either having a ball or you’re the old ball and chain. And if you lose the ball, it’s game over. Ultimately it’s a game of possession: it all comes down to whether you’ve got the ball or not. But how do you get the ball if it’s not in your court? Is having balls just for those who are born with them? Bollocks to that.

Brave New Word presents an evening of original theatre exploring bravery in all its forms. Rip up your copies of Le Morte D’Arthur: the Knights of the Round Table have finally had their day. We’re taking the ball back and celebrating lesser-chronicled tales of bravery. From Valentina Tereshkova to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to Caster Semenya to David ‘Golden Balls’ Beckham: we’re interested in what it means be first to the ball. Whether having balls is about being on the pitch, radicalism or quiet defiance, join us in investigating what courage truly means in a world which is still hung up on gender.”

What they are looking for: 5-10 minute pieces which will be performed by actors in front of an audience. They aim to include work by writers of different ages, backgrounds, genders and levels of experience, which they believe will allow them to explore the theme from multiple perspectives. They particularly encourage submissions from first-time writers, and feel that the structure of their events allows new writers to experiment with drama as a form.Though the majority of work performed is drama, they encourage submissions of any form.

ALLS: acts of bravery in a gendered world.
