It’s fair to say that since we started in 2013, we’ve grown year on year in terms of the work we do to support emerging writers in the UK and beyond! We’re kicking off 2025 with the same goals we’ve always had: to nurture the next generation of playwrights and support writers in developing their craft and career. It might not be ‘new year, new us’ but we do want this year to be the biggest and best year ever!! So, here’s a taster of what’s coming up and how you can get involved in helping this wonderful community expand even further…
WrAP2025
As always, we’ve started the new year with a bang in the form of our January playwriting challenge, #WrAP2025. It’s been amazing so far, with playwrights laying down the foundations for ideas they will work on throughout the year. The community spirit has been inspirational this year and is great reminder for us of why we do this, and why the work of London Playwrights is vital. If you missed #WrAP2025, don’t worry – members will be able to access this at any time to embark on a playwriting challenge of their own!
Members’ Submissions and Feedback
This project might simmer away in the background but it’s an integral part of our work and we’ll be continuing with this throughout 2025 . Every member can submit one play a year to us and get feedback from our experienced readers along with consideration for our development schemes. This is a great chance to have your work read in full and to get some all important feedback, which can be hard to get your hands on!
Development Schemes
Our development schemes provide an opportunity for playwrights to develop their skills and get practical advice to help them progress towards production of their plays. We offer various opportunities to writers at different stages of development: from early stage writers to those polishing their plays ready to submit. We select writers through our members’ submission which is open all year round apart from a few weeks in the summer when we go through the selection process. Find out more here.
Workshops and events
Offering a range of practical, creative, and inspirational workshops and courses is the perfect way for us to meet our members and support playwrights in developing their work. We also believe building a network and getting to know other writers is vital for playwrights. Our extensive range of Zoom workshops are open to absolutely everyone, at all levels, and in all time zones. We aim to keep the sessions as low cost as possible (whilst paying our facilitators fairly) and offer a 30% discount for our members. Find out more about our latest workshops here. Dramaturgy and feedback
In 2025, we’ll be continuing to offer high quality, great value feedback via our script consulting services. We have a range of options to suit all budgets and a team of experienced dramaturgs who are passionate about helping writers create their best work. Last year, our dramaturgical work also expanded to help writers create table readings and rehearsed readings (both in person and on Zoom), we’ll be continuing with this valuable work in the year ahead. We need support
Whilst our ambitions are big and our passion for supporting new writers is as strong as ever, the financial climate is beyond challenging. We are funded entirely by our paid subscribers and those who use our services. We understand that times are hard and people are becoming more discerning about subscriptions but we really need subscribers in order to survive – and to continue to create our free resources including the Weekly Round-up.
