Opportunities – Pick of the Week: Tamasha seeks diverse shorts for comedy scratch night at Soho Theatre

Each week we look through our pile of writing opportunities to pick out one we think is particularly worth your time. It could be an innovative brief, great prize money, a high-profile company, or just plain fun.

This week’s pick: Tamasha seeks diverse shorts for comedy scratch night at Soho Theatre

Description: applications are open for writers to submit short scripts for Tamasha’s next scratch night, a collaboration with Soho Theatre to find the best diverse new comedy writing talent.

Tamasha says: “We’re not looking for stand-up routines – but short plays, sketches or scenes for up to four actors. Scripts which fearlessly take on the extraordinary times we are living in through, scripts which explore and comment on the hidden fault lines in our society, but above all – scripts which make us double-up with laughter.

“They say death is easy, comedy is hard. But it is also the most potent weapon in any writers’ toolkit. This Tamasha scratch night is an opportunity to try your hand.”

What’s so great about it? Well, four winning writers will receive dramaturgical feedback from esteemed company Tamasha and have the opportunity to develop their piece in response. The selected four will also get a fee to have their work performed by professional actors at a script-in-hand reading at none other than the Soho Theatre on 12 Monday June at 7.30pm. So, what’s not to like? Nothing, as long as you fancy trying your hand at writing some comedy! They are accepting sketches or short standalone pieces for no more than four actors, and they are particularly encouraging submissions from writers from diverse backgrounds. You’ve got until 24th April at 12 noon to come up with something funny!
